Flip the Bottle: What Is Really Inside the Most Popular Sunscreen Brands

Big 4 toxic chemical UV filters

I keep finding myself in the same conversations. The Big 4 toxic chemical UV filters come up constantly, and lately I have been spending serious time on social calling out the BS, dismantling the marketing fraud, and saying the same thing over and over "Flip the Bottle" "Read Labels" "Demand transparency." I got tired of the lies, so it is time to break this down for real.  I recently wrote about the Big 4 chemical UV filters linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenic activity, and reef destruction: oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and octocrylene. Now let us get specific. Below is a brand-by-brand breakdown of some of the most widely sold sunscreens in the United States. We pulled the active ingredient lists so you do not have to.

This is not about shame. It is about information. The brands listed here are popular, widely trusted, and sold in every drugstore, surf shop, and big box retailer in the country. Most consumers have no idea what is in them .

I want to share the truth!

Flip the bottle. Read the active ingredients. That is where the truth lives.

Banana Boat

One of the most recognized names in sunscreen and one of the most problematic ingredient lists on the market. Banana Boat products routinely contain oxybenzone and octocrylene, sometimes alongside avobenzone in their broad spectrum formulas.

Sun Bum

Let me jsut start out with the fact that SUnBum was just ordered to pay $300, 000 and ordered to remove all"ref safe" "skin safe'  literature by CA Supeme Court.* Sun Bum has built a strong lifestyle brand around beach culture and good vibes. Unfortunately, the ingredient story does not match the aesthetic. Most Sun Bum SPF products rely heavily on avobenzone and octocrylene, with octinoxate appearing in several formulas.

Supergoop

Heres another one for you.  Supergoop was just ordered to pay $350, 000 and ordered to remove all  "no toxic chemicals and skin safe"  literature by CA Supeme Court.* Supergoop has positioned itself as a prestige, skin-first sunscreen brand with sophisticated marketing and a loyal following in the clean beauty space. The branding implies safety. The formulas tell a different story. The majority of Supergoop products are chemical sunscreens built on avobenzone and octocrylene.

Vacation

Vacation is one of the newer entrants in the premium sunscreen space, built around nostalgia and retro summer aesthetics. The brand is fun and visually compelling. The formulas are classic chemical sunscreen with avobenzone and octocrylene as primary actives. ANd can I add, they haev a "Baby Oil" sunscreen they promote.  Who wants to raise thier hands to major second degree burns!!!

Coola

So Im going to add here that I  persoanly had a second degree burn from thier Sun Body Glaze  SPF.  Yes, I  was my own company guinea pig for a while to prove my point on why and how  my stomache heated up in the sun and had a 2nd degree burn within an hour.  Coola markets itself as a sun protection brand with a medical and dermatologist credibility angle. Some products do offer mineral options, but chemical formulas with octocrylene remain present across the line.

A Note on Mineral Options Within Chemical Brands

Several of the brands above do offer mineral or zinc oxide based formulas within their product lines. We have noted these where applicable. However, it is worth pointing out that a brand can carry one mineral product and twenty chemical ones. The existence of a cleaner option does not make a brand a clean brand.

When you are shopping, do not rely on the front of the bottle. Words like natural, reef friendly, gentle, and dermatologist tested are marketing language, not ingredient guarantees. The only thing that tells you what is in the formula is the active ingredients list on the back.

Natural on the front means nothing. Active ingredients on the back means everything.

What Genuinely Clean Looks Like

A truly mineral sunscreen has one or two active ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. That is the complete list. No oxybenzone. No octocrylene. No avobenzone. No stabilizers that degrade into carcinogens.

At EthoSun, non-nano zinc oxide is our only active ingredient. Every formula. Every product. No exceptions and no fine print.

You should not have to be a chemist to buy sunscreen safely. But until labeling laws catch up to the science, reading the label yourself is the most powerful thing you can do.
