Dangerous Sun Screen Chemicals
Share
When it comes to sun protection, most Americans are unknowingly making dangerous choices. A new report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals a startling truth: more than 80% of sunscreens sold in the U.S. are either ineffective or contain harmful ingredients.
The EWG analyzed over 1,700 products—from sunscreens to SPF-rated moisturizers and lip balms. The findings? A long list of products filled with toxic chemicals and misleading claims.
The Big Offenders
Top-selling brands like Neutrogena, Banana Boat, and Coppertone were flagged for using ingredients like:
- Oxybenzone – a known hormone disruptor
- Retinyl Palmitate – a form of Vitamin A that may accelerate skin damage when exposed to sunlight
Neutrogena stood out for promoting its sunscreens with “#1 dermatologist recommended,” while simultaneously pushing formulas with questionable safety and SPF ratings as high as 110—well above the FDA’s recommended cap of SPF 50+, which it calls “inherently misleading.”
What Other Countries Already Know
Unlike the U.S., countries like Canada, Australia, Japan, and those in the EU have banned ultra-high SPF claims and enforce stricter UVA protection standards. The EWG estimates that half of U.S. sunscreen products wouldn’t be allowed on European shelves.
The Bottom Line
Only 21% of the products reviewed met the EWG’s safety criteria.
If you’re applying sunscreen thinking you’re protected—think again. Chemical-laden sunscreens not only put your health at risk, they can give a false sense of security, leading to longer sun exposure and more damage.
What You Can Do
