Does Expensive Sunscreen Really Perform Better?

Does Expensive Sunscreen Really Perform Better?

What Makes a Premium Sunscreen Different From an Affordable Sunscreen?

This is one of the questions I'm asked more than almost any other.

"Why would I spend more on a mineral sunscreen when I can buy an inexpensive broad spectrum sunscreen for ten dollars at the drugstore?"

It's a fair question, and honestly, it's one everyone should ask before purchasing any skincare product. As consumers, we should always understand what we're paying for, whether we're buying a daily sunscreen, luxury skincare, or any other skincare product. We should know whether the product truly delivers on its promises.

The answer, however, isn't as simple as saying expensive is always better. Because it isn't.

I've used premium skincare products that didn't justify their price, and I've also come across affordable products that performed remarkably well. Price alone has never been a reliable measure of sunscreen quality or overall skincare performance. What ultimately matters is what's inside the bottle, how thoughtfully it's formulated, and whether it's a product you'll actually enjoy using every single day.

That's the conversation I believe we should be having.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if two bottles both say SPF 50 broad spectrum sunscreen, they're essentially the same product. In reality, that number tells only a small part of the story. It's a little like assuming two cars are identical simply because they both have four wheels. The experience behind the wheel, the engineering, the materials, and the craftsmanship are what separate one from another.

The same is true with daily sunscreen.

How evenly it applies, how it feels on your skin, whether it pills under makeup, leaves a white cast, stings around your eyes, or supports your skin beyond UV protection with hydrating, skin nourishing ingredients are all part of the equation. Those are the details you don't see on the front label, yet they're often what determine whether someone uses the product every day or lets it sit forgotten in a bathroom cabinet.

To me, that's where value begins.

A broad spectrum sunscreen isn't simply a UV filter suspended in a bottle. It's an entire skincare formulation. Every ingredient has a purpose, and every ingredient contributes to how the product performs.

When evaluating a sunscreen, I encourage people to ask different questions.

1. Does it feel comfortable enough to wear every morning as part of your daily skincare routine?

2. Does it leave your skin hydrated or dry?

3. Does it blend beautifully without leaving a white cast or noticeable residue?

4. Does it work seamlessly with the rest of your skincare routine?

5. Most importantly, does it make you want to wear it again tomorrow?

Those questions matter just as much as the SPF rating because the best sunscreen has always been the one you'll use consistently every single day.

That philosophy shaped every decision we  made while developing EthoSun. Throughout the formulation process, I kept returning to one simple question.

"Would I feel completely confident recommending this to someone I love?"

If the answer wasn't an immediate yes, we kept working.

Quality ingredients cost more. Thoughtful formulation takes time. Testing requires patience. None of those things are shortcuts, and none of them happen overnight. They're investments made long before a product ever reaches a shelf.

I've also learned that texture is one of the most underestimated aspects of sunscreen.

People rarely stop using a daily sunscreen because they disagree with its SPF rating. They stop using it because it feels greasy, heavy, sticky, or uncomfortable. If applying sunscreen feels like a chore, consistency becomes almost impossible.

That's one of the reasons I wanted EthoSun to feel more like luxury skincare than traditional sunscreen while still delivering reliable broad spectrum UV protection. I wanted it to become something people enjoyed applying each morning instead of something they couldn't wait to wash off at the end of the day.

To me, that's what thoughtful formulation should accomplish.

If an affordable sunscreen encourages someone to protect their skin every single day, I genuinely celebrate that. Consistent protection will always be more valuable than purchasing a premium product that sits unused.

At the same time, many consumers are looking for more than basic UV protection. They're looking for products that hydrate the skin, layer beautifully under makeup, include thoughtfully selected ingredients, and complement the rest of their skincare routine. They want products that perform well enough to become part of their daily lives rather than something reserved for vacations.

That's where formulation begins to separate one product from another.

When someone purchases a premium sunscreen or luxury skincare product, they're not simply paying for elegant packaging. Ideally, they're investing in years of research, ingredient quality, manufacturing standards, formulation expertise, testing, and the overall experience of using the product. The goal should never be to create something that's expensive for the sake of being expensive.

The goal should always be to create an exceptional mineral sunscreen people genuinely enjoy wearing every day.

Throughout the development of EthoSun, there were opportunities to reduce costs, but i chose to stay true to the quakity if the brand I was building,  NO cutting corners! We could have selected less expensive ingredients, simplified our formulations, or accepted compromises most consumers might never have noticed.

But I would have known.  And that mattered to me.

I've always believed that if you're asking someone to trust your brand, you have a responsibility to earn that trust every single day. Sometimes that means choosing the more difficult path because it's ultimately the better one.

People often associate luxury with beautiful packaging or prestigious branding. While those things certainly contribute to the overall experience, they've never defined luxury for me.

To me, luxury means refusing to compromise.

It means paying attention to details most people never see. It means selecting ingredients because they're the right choice, not simply the least expensive one. It means creating products you're genuinely proud to stand behind long after the marketing campaign is over.

So, is expensive sunscreen worth it? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.

I actually think there's a better question to ask.

Is the daily sunscreen you're using one you'll happily wear every single day?

If the answer is yes, you're already making an investment in the long term health of your skin. If that sunscreen also feels beautiful to wear, supports your skincare routine, and aligns with your personal values, then you've found something truly worthwhile.

As the Founder and CEO of EthoSun, people often assume I'll tell everyone they need the most expensive sunscreen available.

I don't believe that.

I believe people deserve transparency. They deserve broad spectrum sunscreens that are thoughtfully formulated, honestly represented, backed by quality ingredients, and designed with their long term skin health in mind. They deserve to understand what they're buying and why it matters.

At the end of the day, beautiful skin isn't built by chasing luxury for the sake of luxury. It's built by choosing a daily sunscreen you trust, making thoughtful skincare decisions, and wearing broad spectrum sunscreen consistently.

That's always been the philosophy behind EthoSun. And I hope it always will be.
