Sunlight isn’t the Enemy, Disconnection is.

“The thing that Western Medicine tells everyone is so dangerous that we must perpetually shield against is actually one of the most life-giving acts we could partake in… being loved, kissed, penetrated, and healed by the sun.” – Kim Anami
Somewhere along the way, sunlight became something to fear. We were taught to block it, cover it, filter it often before even stepping outside. While that guidance came from a well intentioned place, it left out an important truth. The body is designed to work with sunlight, not avoid it entirely.
Your skin produces melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its color. This process is not just cosmetic. It is part of your body’s natural response to sun exposure. With gradual, consistent exposure, the skin begins to adapt, becoming more resilient over time.
This is one of the ways the body interacts with its environment. It adjusts, responds, and protects when given the opportunity.
Your Body Is Designed to Adapt
Sunlight is more than exposure. It is information.
It helps regulate your internal clock, supports hormone balance, and plays a role in immune function and vitamin D production. It signals to your body what time it is and how to respond to the day. When sunlight is completely blocked, that communication is reduced.
But adaptation has limits. The body is highly capable, but it is not designed for unlimited exposure. At a certain point, sun exposure shifts from beneficial to damaging.
Understanding that threshold is key.
So, Is Sunscreen Necessary?
Yes!. And the answer comes down to dose. Your body benefits from sunlight in appropriate amounts. But beyond a certain level, exposure begins to create damage.
The goal is not to eliminate sun exposure. It is to manage it. Short, controlled time in the sun supports your body’s natural processes, including vitamin D production and the skin’s ability to adapt. Longer or more intense exposure, especially during higher UV periods, increases the risk of skin damage. This is where sunscreen becomes important.
It is not meant to replace your body’s natural response. It is used to help prevent overexposure once your skin has reached its limit.
In practice, this means being aware of your environment, your skin type, and how long you are in the sun. Sunscreen becomes part of that strategy, not the starting point for every moment outdoors.
Used this way, it supports the skin rather than working against it.
Smarter Sun
The goal is not more sun or less sun. It is smarter sun by paying attention to short, intentional exposure, awareness of UV levels and understnading protection when needed.
This is how you support your skin’s natural ability to respond, while also preventing damage. Sunlight is not inherently harmful. Overexposure is and protection, when used appropriately, allows you to stay within that balance.
Sunlight is not the enemy, disconnection is.
