Why I Believe Sunscreen Is the Most Important Step in Any Skincare Routine

Prevention Is a Philosophy, Not Just a Skincare Routine
If there's one thing I've learned throughout my journey in health, wellness, and ultimately creating EthoSun, it's this: we spend far too much time trying to repair damage that could have been prevented in the first place.
Walk into any beauty retailer today and you'll find shelves lined with serums promising to reduce wrinkles, creams designed to brighten dark spots, and treatments claiming to restore youthful skin. The skincare industry has become incredibly sophisticated, and there are some truly remarkable products available. Yet I often find myself asking the same question: Why are we investing so much in repairing our skin while overlooking one of the most effective ways to protect it every single day?
Why Prevention Matters More Than Repair
For many people, daily sunscreen is still something that's tossed into a beach bag or packed for a tropical vacation. It's viewed as a seasonal product rather than an essential part of a daily skincare routine. Fortunately, I believe that mindset is beginning to change, and I think it's one of the most important shifts happening in skincare today.
When I founded EthoSun, I wasn't interested in creating just another sunscreen. I wanted to create a product people would actually enjoy wearing every day. It needed to feel luxurious on the skin, fit seamlessly into a modern skincare routine, and reflect a philosophy I've always believed in: we should never have to choose between protecting our skin and protecting the environment.
To me, sunscreen has never been simply about avoiding a sunburn. It's one of the most valuable investments we can make in the long term health of our skin.
Sunscreen Is More Than Protection Against Sunburn
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the belief that great skincare begins with expensive products. While I appreciate a well formulated serum or moisturizer as much as anyone, I've never believed that healthy skin starts with what we use to repair it. I believe it starts with protecting the skin we already have.
Think about how much time and money we spend searching for the perfect vitamin C serum, peptide treatment, retinol, or moisturizer. These products absolutely have their place, but none of them can erase years of unnecessary UV damage. Every day we're exposed to ultraviolet radiation while walking the dog, driving to work, having lunch on a patio, watching our children's sporting events, or simply running errands. Those moments rarely seem significant on their own, yet they quietly accumulate over months and years.
Healthy skin isn't built overnight. It's built through thoughtful choices made consistently over time.
That philosophy extends well beyond skincare. One of the principles that has guided my life is that prevention is almost always easier than correction. Whether we're talking about our health, our finances, our relationships, or our careers, the small decisions we make today often determine the outcomes we experience years from now. Our skin is no different.
While no product can stop the natural aging process, we know that daily sun protection helps reduce one of the most significant external factors that contributes to premature skin aging. Fine lines, uneven pigmentation, and loss of elasticity are all influenced by cumulative UV exposure. That's why I encourage people to stop thinking about sunscreen as something reserved for vacations and begin viewing daily SPF as one of the foundational steps in caring for their skin every day.
Healthy Skin Is Built Through Daily Habits
What excites me most is how much sunscreen itself has evolved.
Many of us grew up associating mineral sunscreen with thick, chalky formulas that felt heavy and left an obvious white cast. I understand why so many people avoided wearing them. Fortunately, formulation technology has come a long way. Today's mineral sunscreens can be lightweight, elegant, and comfortable enough to wear under makeup or on their own without feeling like you're sacrificing the experience for the protection.
That evolution was one of the driving forces behind EthoSun. I wanted to prove that choosing a mineral sunscreendidn't mean compromising on performance, appearance, or luxury. I believe taking care of your health should feel every bit as refined as the rest of your skincare routine.
It's also encouraging to see consumers becoming more thoughtful about the products they choose. People are asking better questions than they were even a few years ago. They're reading ingredient labels, learning about their skin barrier, and looking for products that support long term skin health rather than simply promising quick results. I see that as an incredibly positive shift because it reflects a growing appreciation for prevention instead of correction.
Why We Created EthoSun Differently
That same philosophy guided every decision we made while developing EthoSun.
Like any company, we had opportunities to make different choices. We could have selected less expensive ingredients, simplified formulations, or followed trends simply because they were popular. Instead, I kept returning to one simple question: Would I confidently recommend this to my own family?
If the answer wasn't an immediate yes, we continued refining the product.
I've always believed trust isn't built through clever marketing or beautiful packaging. It's built through consistency, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to quality. That's a responsibility I take seriously because every product we create reflects not only our brand, but also the values that inspired me to start the company in the first place.
Prevention Is a Philosophy, Not Just a Skincare Routine
Another belief that's become increasingly important to me is that taking care of ourselves shouldn't come at the expense of the world around us. Through my work in Roatán and alongside organizations dedicated to protecting marine ecosystems, I've seen firsthand how connected our everyday choices are to the environments we love. Whether we're spending time on Arizona's hiking trails or enjoying the Caribbean, our sunscreen eventually goes somewhere. I believe innovation should allow us to care for both our skin and our planet without asking consumers to compromise either.
People often ask me what the single most important part of my skincare routine is, expecting me to mention an expensive serum or the latest ingredient making headlines. My answer usually surprises them.
It's sunscreen.
Every morning.
Not because I'm worried about spending every day at the beach, but because I understand the value of consistency. That one habit has become as automatic as brushing my teeth. In fact, I keep my sunscreen right beside my toothbrush so I never have to remember it. It's simply part of my morning routine, and I've found that the healthiest habits are usually the ones that become second nature.
Creating EthoSun has never been about selling sunscreen. It's been about encouraging people to think differently about sun protection and helping them recognize that healthy skin isn't built when damage appears. It's built through the quiet, consistent choices we make long before we ever see the results.
My hope is that more people stop thinking of sunscreen as something they wear only on vacation and begin seeing it for what it truly is: one of the most important investments they can make in the long term health of their skin. Beautiful skin isn't created by the products we use to repair damage. It's built through the quiet, consistent habits that protect it every single day.
